গাঙকুমারীঃ বাঁচার লড়াইয়ে মানবপ্রজাতির আদি আখ্যান

সাধনা আহেমেদের গাঙকুমারী  আখ্যানের সাথে আমার প্রথম সাক্ষাৎ বিডিনিউজ২৪.কম-এর সাহিত্যপাতার মাধ্যমে। ২০১৮ সালের আগস্ট মাসে প্রকাশিত “চাঁদহীন এক আকাশের নিচে” নামের এক কাব্যিক শিরোনাম আমাকে গল্পের ভেতরে টেনে নিয়ে যায়। গল্প তো নয়, যেন শব্দমালার নৃত্য। বাংলাভাষার শব্দভান্ডার নিয়ে আমার মনে কোন দ্বিধা বা সংশয় কোনকালেই ছিল না। দুঃখজনকভাবে, ইদানিংকালের লেখালেখিতে তার প্রয়োগ সেভাবে নজরে পড়ছিল না। “চাঁদহীন এক আকাশের নিচে” শিরোনামের গল্পে বাংলা শব্দভান্ডারকে নতুন রূপে ফিরে আসতে দেখে তাই খানিকটা বিস্ময় জাগে, বলা যায় অবাক হয়েই পড়তে থাকি। কেবল শব্দের আসা-যাওয়া তো না, শব্দব্রম্মের কৃপায় তারা তাদের বহুমাত্রিক রূপ নিয়ে এমনভাবে হাজির যে, পড়তে পড়তে মনে হচ্ছিল তারা যেন মাথা উঁচু করে নৃত্য করছে। দীর্ঘ তমসার অন্ধকারের পরে মেঘের আড়াল থেকে সূর্য যেভাবে উঁকি মারে, অনেকটা তেমন রঙের ছোঁয়া বাক্য থেকে বাক্যে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। অসমাপ্ত পাঠের কারণে আগ্রহ ছিল এর পূর্ণাঙ্গ পাঠ নিয়ে। ২০১৯ সালের বইমেলায় বইটি হাতে এলো। শিরোনাম: গাঙকুমারী’। তারপর থেকে কয়েকবার পড়া হয়ে গেছে। শব্দব্রহ্মের অপার কৃপা কী রকম পক্ষপাতদুষ্টু হতে পারে, তা বুঝতে গল্পটি পড়তে হবে― বারবার। পড়তে গিয়ে তিনধরনের বর্ণনার মুখোমুখি হবো আমরা: গল্পকারের, চরিত্রগুলোর মুখে মুখে এবং পালাকারদের গানে। আখ্যানে এটা নতুন কিছু না; কিন্তু, গাঙকুমারী পড়তে গিয়ে আমার মনে হয়েছে, ভরা জোছনায় মেঘনার বুকে ভেসে চলা কোনো নৌকায় বসে আছি।জোছনা, নদী ও নৌকা― যে যার মতো করে দৃশ্যগুলো এঁকে যাচ্ছে এবং শেষে পুরোটা এক অখন্ড দৃশ্য হয়ে উঠছে। বর্ণনা থেকে কিছুটা উদ্ধৃত করা যাক:

জলের উপর ভেসে থাকা কচুরিপানা কলমীলতা আর পাড়ের ধারে গজিয়ে ওঠা ঢোলকলমীর ফুলে― রোদজ্বলা নীল পড়েছে কিছুটা বেগুনী হয়ে। রূপমতিচরের পাশেই ভেসে আছে ধইঞ্চাঝোপে ঘেরা পানাউল্লারচর। অনেক দূরে― নদীর দক্ষিণ সীমানায় দেখা যায় মুছাপুর আর ইব্রাহিমপুরের সুপারি ও নারকেল গাছগুলোর মাথায় পিছলে পড়েছে চকচকে রোদ। উত্তরে শিবপুর-কৃষ্ণনগর-শম্ভুপুর-রঘুনাথপুর― নদী থেকে দূরে হলেও গ্রামের ফাঁকে ফাঁকে ফসলি নিচু ফসলি জমিগুলো বর্ষার ভাসাজলে ডুবে থাকে। পুর্বদিকে লক্ষ্মীপুর-জগন্নাথপুর পার হয়ে মেঘনা যেখানে তার নীল হাত বাড়িয়ে ব্রহ্মপুত্রের কালকেউটেকালো হাত ছুঁয়েছে― বুকে ভরে নেয়নি বলে পাশাপাশি চলা দুই নদীর আলাদা রং বহুদূর থেকেও চেনা যায়। কিছুতেই মেলে দুই ধারা। একে অন্যের চারদিকে ঘোরে আর গরজায়। তাতেই সেখানে সৃষ্টি হয়েছে ভয়ঙ্কর এক ঘূর্ণিপাক।(পৃষ্ঠা ২৮)

গাঙকুমারী এমনই ঘুর্ণিপাকের দৃশ্য নিয়ে রচিত আখ্যান, যেখানে নদীভাঙা বাঙালির শতাব্দির জীবনসংগ্রাম ‘রূপমতিচর’ নামের এক জনপদে জেলেকন্যা অঞ্জলির দেড় দশকের জীবনসংগ্রামের অন্তরালে ঘুর্ণিপাকের রূপকের মধ্যে বারবার করে জেগে ওঠে। বাংলাদেশের জনপদে হাজারো নারী ওই অঞ্জলির মতো সংগ্রামরতা, প্রবল ঘুর্ণিপাকের মধ্যেও তারা বারবার জেগে ওঠে। আর জেগে ওঠে বলেই বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ কাল থেকে কালান্তরে প্রাসঙ্গিক হয়ে থাকে। মুক্তিযুদ্ধ প্রাসঙ্গিক হয়ে আছে গাঙকুমারী  গল্পেও। এখানে রামু ও সবুর নামের দুই চরিত্র মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ভেতর থেকে উঠে আসা― পাকিস্তানি হানাদারদের আক্রমনে মানসিক ভারসাম্য হারানো এই দুই জন যেন চিরচেনা চারপাশের সেই হেরে যাওয়া মানুষগুলোর প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে। নিঃসন্দেহে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ বাঙালি জাতির এক প্রত্যক্ষ অভিজ্ঞতা, আর সেই অভিজ্ঞতা যখন রূপক হয়ে গল্পে ঢুকে পড়ে, তখন স্বাধীন দেশেও হানাদার প্রত্যয়টি প্রবল হয়ে ওঠে নানাভাবে― রাজনীতি, ধর্ম, সামাজিক ও স্থানীয় জীবনধারার মতো সকল জায়গায় যখন অন্ধকারের শক্তি মুক্তির পথে বাঁধা হয়ে দাঁড়ায়, তখন আমরা অসংখ্য রামু ও সবুরের মুখোমুখি হই। আমরা মুখোমুখি হই পালা গায়ক আউয়াল দেওয়ানের, যে কিনা পারদের প্রলেপ উঠে যাওয়া আয়নায় নিজের মুখ দেখে। দেখা যায় না বটে; কিন্তু, আউয়াল দেওয়ানকে দেখার চেষ্টা করতে হয়। এই রূপকল্পে খুব নিখুঁতভাবে পচাত্তর পরবর্তী বাংলাদেশের চিত্রটি আঁকা হয়ে যায়।কারণ বাংলাদেশ নামক দেশটির শাসনকাঠামো তখন ওই পারদ-ওঠা আয়নার মতোই অস্বচ্ছ। নামে প্রজাতন্ত্র হলে কী হবে, শাসনের জায়গা থেকে জনগণ তখন ওই খসে পড়া পারদের মতোই বিচ্ছিন্ন। এভাবে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পরবর্তী বাংলাদেশের বিশেষ আলেখ্যকে গাঙকুমারী  গল্পে রূপকের আড়ালে আমাদের সামনে হাজির করা হয়। তবে, আঙ্গিকের কারণে ঘটনাপ্রবাহ কেবলমাত্র সেই কালের মধ্যেই আটকে থাকে না, গল্পটি সমকালীনতার আবহ তৈরীতেও সক্ষম হয়।

বাঙালির সম্মিলিত স্মৃতিসম্ভারে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ এবং পচাত্তর দুটো বিপরীতমুখী প্রত্যয়, যার প্রথমটিকে যদি সম্পদ বলা হয় তো দ্বিতীয়টি অবশ্যই দায়। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মধ্য দিয়ে বাঙালি নিজের মতো করে গল্প বলতে চেয়েছিল, যে গল্পের নাম বাংলাদেশ। কেবল দেশ না, বাঙালি একটা রাষ্ট্রও বানাতে চেয়েছিল, যে রাষ্ট্রে প্রজা মাত্রই একজন রাজা এবং যেখানে সকলের থাকবে বেঁচে থাকার সমান সম্ভাবনা। রাষ্ট্রের সাথে প্রজা তথা রাজার সম্পৃক্ততার শর্তটির নাম প্রজাতন্ত্র এবং প্রজাতন্ত্রই কেবল জনগণকে তার মালিকানার কথা এবং সন্মানের সাথে তার বেঁচে থাকার অধিকারের কথা বারবার স্মরণ করিয়ে দিতে সক্ষম হয়। বাংলাদেশ নামক প্রজাতন্ত্রের সাথে জনগণের বিচ্ছিন্নতার সূচনা যদিও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পরপরই; কিন্তু, পচাত্তর সালে তা চুড়ান্তরূপ লাভ করে। জনগণ রাষ্ট্র থেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে পড়ে। মূলত: তারপর থেকেই বাংলাদেশের জনগণ রাষ্ট্রের উপরে তার কর্তৃত্ব প্রতিষ্ঠার চেষ্টায় সংগ্রামরত। গাঙকুমারী  আখ্যানে আওয়াল দেওয়ান যেভাবে প্রান্তিক জনগণের মধ্যে বিরাজমান বৈষম্য, দারিদ্র্য এবং সর্বোপরী তাদের অর্থনৈতিক সংগ্রামের অগ্র ও পশ্চাতভূমির খোঁজ করার চেষ্টা করে, একইভাবে ওই আখ্যানের রূপকের আড়ালে বাংলাদেশকে নিয়ে অনুরূপ এক খোঁজ সাধনা আহমেদের ভাবনার মধ্য দিয়েও প্রকাশ পায়।

নতুনভাবে জেগে ওঠা রূপমতিচরের জেলেকন্যা অঞ্জলির জীবনসংগ্রাম বিস্তৃত হতে হতে একসময় তার উত্তরণ ঘটে গাঙকুমারী রূপে। এই আখ্যানের নানা বাঁক এবং নানা ছোট ছোট অনুষঙ্গ একত্রিত হয়ে কাহিনীকে বৈচিত্রময় করে তুলেছে। তবে, গল্পের যে দিকটি যে কাউকে ভাবাতে বাধ্য, সেটি ঘটনাগুলোর আকস্মিকতা। আখ্যানের পরতে পরতে পাঠকের পূর্বানুমান নস্মাৎ করে দেয়া কেবল না, নতুন বাস্তবতাকে অনিবার্য করে তুলবার এক সাংঘাতিক নেশায় আক্রান্ত হতে দেখা গেছে লেখককে।এই ঝোঁককে হালকা করে দেখা যাবে না। বাংলাদেশকে ঘিরে রচিত ঘটনাগুলোর আকস্মিকতা কি কল্পকাহিনীকে হার মানায় নি? মুক্তিযুদ্ধে পাকিস্তানি মিলিটারির অত্যাচার দেখে দুই শিশুর মানসিক ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে যাওয়া থেকে শুরু করে যুদ্ধে হারিয়ে যাওয়া অঞ্জলির চাচাতো ভাই বরুণের অনেক বছর পর ফিরে আসা, বরুণ-অঞ্জলির প্রেম, ধনগাজী গং কর্তৃক অঞ্জলি-ব্যতিত পরিবারের সকল সদস্যকে হত্যা, অঞ্জলিকে গণধর্ষণ, অঞ্জলির ধর্মান্তকরণ, ইব্রাহিম মিয়ার সাথে অঞ্জলির বিবাহ, ইব্রাহিম মিয়ার সাথে ধনগাজি গং-এর বিরোধ, দৃশ্যপটে মমিন ডান্ডির আগমন এবং ধনগাজি-মমিন ডান্ডির যৌথ প্রয়াসে পরিবারের কয়েকজন সদস্যসহ ইব্রাহিম মিয়ার মৃত্যু, মমিন-ধনগাজী বিরোধের পরিণতিতে মমিন ডান্ডির হাতে ধনগাজীর মৃত্যু এবং সবশেষে নতুন জীবনের খোঁজে অঞ্জলির গাঙকুমারী হয়ে বেড়িয়ে পড়া―  দৃশ্যগুলো সবই আকস্মিক। কিন্তু, বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক ঘটনাপ্রবাহের সাথে দৃশ্যগুলোর কী অপূর্ব মিল!

আখ্যানে এক চরিত্র হিসু মিয়া, যে কিনা আড়ালে থেকে জনপদের সকল ঘটনার নিয়ন্ত্রক হয়ে ওঠে। বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক ঘটনাবলীও যে আড়াল থেকে ঘটানো হয়, এটা তারই ইঙ্গিত মাত্র। জনগণের সাথে প্রত্যক্ষ যোগাযোগ না থাকা এই হিসু মিয়া ক্ষমতাকেন্দ্রে তার প্রভাবকে বারবার স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয়। জনপদে বিবদমান জনগোষ্ঠীর বিরোধই হচ্ছে হিসু মিয়াদের নিয়ন্ত্রক হয়ে ওঠার চাবিকাঠি। আখ্যানে হিসু মিয়া নামক এই চরিত্রের মধ্যে আমরা আঞ্চলিক ও বৈশ্বিক মোড়লদের উপস্থিতি প্রত্যক্ষ করি। রাষ্ট্রকাঠামো কেবল না, বৈশ্বিক প্রেক্ষাপটে রাষ্ট্রের দূর্বল অবস্থানকে দেখিয়ে দেওয়া যে লেখকের উদ্দেশ্য, সেটা বুঝতে অসুবিধে হয় না।ক্ষমতার দ্বন্দ্বে স্থানিক, রাষ্ট্রীয় এবং বৈশ্বিক উপস্থিতির দৃশ্যপটে রূপমতিচরের জনগোষ্ঠীর নির্লিপ্ততা বাংলাদেশ নামক রাষ্ট্রের গল্পে জনগণের অবস্থান কেবল না, সাহিত্যের জায়গা থেকে একইসাথে তা উত্তরকাঠামোবাদীও বটে।এমন আরো অনেক বিষয় গাঙকুমারী আখ্যানকে বৈশিষ্টপূর্ণ করেছে।

সাধারণভাবে মানুষ সামাজিক শৃঙ্খলার অনুবর্তী, কারণ সমাজ মানবপ্রজাতির আদিতম সংগঠন কেবল না, তাকে শক্তিশালী করতে হয়েছে অন্যান্য প্রজাতির আক্রমন থেকে রক্ষাকল্পে। কিন্তু, সেই সমাজ একসময় মানুষকে মানুষের শত্রু বানিয়ে ছেড়েছে, মানুষ আমরা ও ওরা নামক দুই গোষ্ঠীতে বিভক্ত হয়ে পরষ্পরের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াইয়ে মেতেছে। যুদ্ধ যার অনিবার্য প্রকাশ।তা সত্ত্বেও অন্তর্জগতে মানুষ আসলে কোন বিধিবিধানের অনুগত না সেভাবে। প্রথা বা মিথগুলো কীভাবে সমাজের ভেতরে কাজ করে, কীভাবেই তা ব্যক্তির মনোজগতকে গঠন করে আর কীভাবেই তা প্রতীক আকাড়ে ব্যক্তি তার মনস্তত্বে ঠাঁই দেয়, তা নিয়ে আছে বিস্তর গবেষণা। আখ্যানের লেখককে এসব গবেষণার ধার না ধারলেও চলে।কিন্তু, উপস্থাপনায় এর ব্যাত্যয় ঘটলে আপত্তি উঠবে, সেটা বলাই বাহুল্য। ধর্ম সাম্প্রদায়িকতার কথাই ধরা যাক, গাঙকুমারীতে এর সার্থক রূপায়ন দেখতে পাওয়া যায় মহরম ও দুর্গাপুজার পাশাপাশি উদযাপনের দৃশ্যগুলিতে যেখানে বরুণ মহরমের তাজিয়ায় বয়ে চলা বরাকের রূপের মধ্যে দুর্গার ছায়া দেখতে পায়। এই বর্ণনা সাহসী; কিন্তু, ভক্তের হৃদয় বলে কথা। প্রসঙ্গত বিখ্যাত সুফি সাধক খাজা মইনুদ্দিন চিশতিকে তথা খাজা বাবাকে ঘিরে প্রচলিত একটা গল্পের কথা বলা যেতে পারে। গুরুর সাথে আরো অনেক ভক্তের মতো খাজা বাবাও পথ চলতে চলতে এক কালি মূর্তি দেখে তাঁর গুরু সেজদা দিলে খাজা বাবাও সেজদায় পড়ে যায়। বাকি ভক্তরা গুরুকে পরিত্যাগ করে। সেজদা থেকে উঠে একমাত্র খাজা বাবাকে দেখে গুরু জানতে চাইলেন যে, তিনি কেন কালি মূর্তিকে সেজদা করতে গেলেন যখন আর কেউই করল না। জবাবে খাজা বাবা বললেন যে, কালির আদলে তিনি আসলে গুরুকেই দেখেছেন। গাঙকুমারীতে এর পরেই দেখা যাবে ধর্মের তো বটেই , কল্পিত বাস্তবতার উপর প্রতিষ্ঠিত সকল প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক অক্ষমতা। মহরম ও দুর্গা এবং দশমির চাঁদের উপস্থিতিতে অঞ্জলিকে ধর্ষিত হতে হয়, না দেবতা না রাষ্ট্র―  কেউই অঞ্জলির পাশে দাঁড়ায় না।

গল্পে সাধারণ জনগণের নির্লিপ্ততার বিপরীতে অঞ্জলি এক প্রতিবাদী এবং বিপরীতমূখী চরিত্র। আরেক প্রতিবাদী চরিত্র হচ্ছে খোদেজা, যে কিনা কথা বলতে পারলেও বলে না এবং আখ্যানের শেষে যে কিনা অঞ্জলির সহযাত্রী হয়। সালেহার মুখেও সংলাপ নেই। আখ্যানের কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র হওয়া সত্ত্বেও অঞ্জলিকে তেমন করে কথা বলতে দেখা যায় না। নিরবতা অঞ্জলির ভাষা এবং বলা যায়, তা লেখকের ভাষাও বটে।ভাষা মানুষের সমাজ সংগঠনের এক উপাদান বটে, তবে তা কোনভাবেই মানবপ্রজাতির বেঁচে থাকার অধিকারে অত্যাবশ্যকীয় কোন উপাদান না। নিরবতার শক্তিশালী এক রূপায়ন এই আখ্যানের পরতে পরতে। এরপরেই দেখতে পাবো সেই বিস্ময়কর রূপক, অঞ্জলিকে কেন্দ্র করে দেবি মনসার আবির্ভাব। মনসা দেবিই যে গাঙকুমারী, সেই ইংগিত অঞ্জলির জন্মের সময়ই জানিয়ে দেয়া হয়।

মায়ের জঠরের অন্ধকার ছেড়ে মেঘের গর্জন ছাপিয়ে বেজে ওঠে শিশুর অপার্থিব সঙ্গীত। নৌকার ছইয়ে ঝুলানো হারিকেনের নিভুনিভু আলোয় দিবাকর দেখে মেঘনার মতই নীলরঙা শিশুকন্যা তাকিয়ে আছে তার দিকে। দেবি মনসার এক চোখের দ্যুতি ঠিকরে পড়ছে কন্যার দুই চোখে। সে ভাবে―  এ যে নতুন রূপে মনসারই আগমন।“ (পৃষ্ঠা ২০)

বাঙালির সবচে পুরোনো এবং একমাত্র দেবতা দেবি মনসাকে হাজির করার মধ্য দিয়ে লেখক কেবল ইতিহাসের দায় মিটিয়েছে তা না, একইসাথে বাঙালি জাতির কয়েকহাজার বছরের পরিযায়ী ঘটনার ইংগিতটিও স্পষ্ট করেছেন।বাঙালি নারীর সাহসের পেছনে জিনতত্ত্বের কারবারি হার্ভার্ড অধ্যাপক ড. ডেভিড রিচ তেমনটাই অনুমান করেছেন। বেঁচে থাকাটা মানবপ্রজাতির আদি জেদ হলেও কালক্রমে নানা কল্পিত বাস্তবতার প্রভাবে মানুষ একসময় সেই জেদ থেকে সরে আসে এবং নিজেকে সমাজব্যবস্থার কাছে সমর্পন করে। ব্যতিক্রম ঘটে বেঁচে থাকার পক্ষে আদি জিনের প্রভাবে। অঞ্জলির মধ্যে সেই প্রভাবটিকে আমরা প্রবলভাবে দেখতে পাই।

ধনগাজি অবজ্ঞাভরে একটি বল্লম হাতে তুলে নিয়ে―  দিবাকরের দিকে ছুড়ে মারার জন্য তাক করে। আর মুহূর্তে অঞ্জলির চোখ হয়ে যায় মনসার চোখ। মায়ের গর্ভকাল পূর্ণ করে― ঝড়ের মধ্যে মেঘনার বুকে জন্ম নেওয়া অঞ্জলির শরীরে গর্জে ওঠে সেই নদীর তান্ডব। নিজের অজান্তেই তার হাতে উঠে আসে গোড়ার দিকে তেরচা করে কাটা কাঁচাবাঁশের লগিটি। নিজের শরীর একপাক ঘুরিয়ে― দূরে নৌকার ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা ধনগাজির দিকে তীক্ষ দৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে লগিটি ছুড়ে মারে বল্লমের মতো করে। আকাশ থেকে উড়ন্ত বাজপাখির ঝেড়ে ফেলা একটি পালক হয়ে― লগিটি উড়ে গিয়ে ধনগাজির বল্লম-ধরা ডান হাতটিকে আঘাত করে। ধনগাজি নদীতে পড়ে যায়। (পৃষ্টা ৪৪)

ইব্রাহিম উপুর হয়ে পড়ে― তবু মহাদেবের কোপ থামে না। তা দেখে অঞ্জলির শরীরে আবার জেগে ওঠে মেঘনা। সামনেই খাটের উপর রাখা কাঠের বাটওয়ালা দোনলা বন্দুকটি উঠিয়ে নিয়ে জোরে আঘাত করে মহাদেবের মাথায়। এরপর সে বন্দুক হাতে সামনের দরজা খুলে বেরিয়েই দেখে―ধনগাজি দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। মুহূর্তেই অঞ্জলির চোখে ভর করে মনসার দৃষ্টি। বন্দুক হাতে অঞ্জলিকে দেখে ধনগাজি দৌড় দেয় নদীর দিকে।(পৃষ্ঠা ১১৭)
