Kolkata fest to feature seven plays by Bangladeshi playwrights

Seven Bangladeshi plays will be featured at a week-long international theatre festival titled ‘Puber Theatre’ scheduled to begin today at Salt Lake in Kolkata, India.

The festival, organised by Indian troupe Prachya New Alipore, will feature two plays by Syed Shamsul Haq, four plays respectively by Syed Waliullah, Sadhana Ahmed, Mahbub Alam, Apurba Kumar Kunda and a compilation from Maimansingha Gitika.

Four Bangladeshi troupes and three Indian troupes will stage the plays at Purbashree Auditorium in Salt Lake during the festival.

Bangladeshi troupes like Dhaka-based Swapnadal and Shabdo Natya Charcha Kendra, Jessore-based Bibartan and Sirajganj-based Natyalok and Indian troupes Na-e Natua, Kalyani Natyacharcha Kendra and host troupe Prachya New Alipore will stage the plays at the festival, which will continue till June 28.

The first three days of the festival will feature performances by Indian troupes, while the following days will feature shows by Bangladeshi troupes.

The festival will begin today with a show by Indian troupe Na-e Natua. The troupe will stage a play based on the popular palas of Maimensingha Geetika. Indian troupe Kalyani Natyacharcha Kendra will stage Syed Shamsul Haq’s seminal play Nuruldiner Sara Jibon on the second day, while the host troupe Prachya New Alipore will stage Laalsalu, an adaptation of Syed Waliullah’s famous novel with the same title on the third day.

Among Bangladeshi troupes, Sirajganj-based Natyalok will stage Rup Sundori, a play by playwright Mahbub Alam, on June 25, Shabdo Natyacharcha Kendra will stage Champabati, an adaptation of Jasimuddin’s Beder Meye by Syed Shamsul Haq, on June 26, Jessore-based troupe Bibartan will stage its acclaimed play Maatbring, written by Sadhana Ahmed, on June 27 and Swapnadal will stage monodrama Helen Keller, written by Apurba Kumar Kundu, on the concluding day of the festival.
